Fowler returns to top as a Rover, linking up with old mate Ince at Blackburn

Robbie Fowler could have been forgiven for asking Paul Ince if he had dialled the right number when the offer came of a return to the Barclays Premier League at the age of 33.

Six years ago, Fowler was struggling for form and fitness at Leeds when he received a text asking if he would be interested in joining Liverpool.

Less than a year into an ill-fated and unwanted transfer away from his home club, he wasted no time contacting Anfield, only for an embarrassed go-between to tell him sheepishly: 'Sorry, mate. I was supposed to send that to Robbie Keane, not you.'

Liverpool may not fare any better in their latest bid to lure Keane to Anfield, given Spurs' £20million asking price, but Fowler can rest assured he really is on the brink of a dream move this time.

After surgery on a hip in January and being presented with a pay-as-you-play deal by Cardiff, the former England striker could scarcely have imagined the Premier League would come knocking.

He still has to convince former Liverpool teammate Ince of his fitness at a pre-season training camp in Germany, but the prospect of a bonus season among the elite and the chance to step out at Anfield again should be all the incentive he needs.

Fowler's agent George Scott said: 'Robbie was all set to sign at Cardiff but, at the last minute, Paul Ince came in and handed him a chance to return to the Premier League. It really was too good to turn down.'

It represents a massive gamble by Blackburn's newmanager as he bids to prove his top-flight credentials.

Some may see it as a bold move but others will point to Fowler's declining fitness and mobility in his final season at Liverpool and wonder whether it might rebound on the former MK Dons and Macclesfield boss.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez decided against keeping Fowler a year ago and saw no reason for doubting his judgment as events unfolded at Cardiff.

Awarded a £20,000-aweek, 12-month contract, Dave Jones' prize capture scored six times in 16 games before his hip operation.

His abrupt departure left a sour taste at Ninian Park. Cardiff Supporters Club chairman Vince Alm said: 'I know people are disappointed but also glad to see the back of him.

'He hardly played for us yet took home a large sum in wages, then dumped us when he got fit.

'Youngsters who idolised him here are especially devastated.'

But Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale said: 'It's frustrating to lose him but at this stage of his career it is understandable he wants to accept an offer to return to the Premier League.'
