Fowler wanted north of the border

Glasgow rivals Rangers and Celtic are the early frontrunners to offer freed Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler a fresh start.

Rangers' former Everton manager Walter Smith believes Fowler's goal instinct could help offset the loss of Dado Prso, while Celtic's Gordon Strachan is looking to strenghen his squad, ahead of another Champions League campaign.

Fowler: Says farewell to the Kop

Portsmouth have also been linked with the 32-year old former England marksman, who will carefully weigh up his options after making an emotional farewell Anfield appearance against Charlton last Sunday.

As Fowler waited for word on whether he will have a role to play among the substitutes, in next week's Champions League final against AC Milan, skipper Steven Gerrard cast a critical eye over Liverpool's season and admitted their Premiership form had fallen below expectations.

"We've been on a high for almost a fortnight now, since putting Chelsea out in the semi-final, but we can't escape the fact that we haven't been good enough in the League," he said.

"Ask the manager or me, or anyone else in our dressing room, and the answer will be exactly the same - we had bigger ambitions for this season than the Champions' League.

"We always had one eye on Europe, but we also wanted the League flag flying back at Anfield and felt we were in a good position to have a real go at it.

"We were hampered a bit, to begin with, by the World Cup. I was struggling to find last season's energy levels, and a few of the other lads were, too, but we can't use that as an excuse.

"It was the same for all the top clubs, and nothing can alter the fact that we gave ourselves a mountain to climb by making such a slow start to the season."
