Fowler: Why I chose Cardiff

Fowler: Raring to go
Robbie Fowler joined Cardiff City on a free transfer yesterday and revealed it was chairman Peter Ridsdale's silver tongue which sealed the deal.

Fowler agreed a two-year contract with the Ninian Park club following his release by Liverpool.

The 32-year-old former England striker claimed he had turned down offers from Premier League sides to be reunited with Ridsdale, who took him to Leeds in November 2001 in an £11 million transfer.

"Obviously I know Peter from my time with Leeds, when he signed me from Liverpool," said Fowler. "Peter wanted success there and he wants Cardiff to be successful, too.

"He is a very ambitious man and that has to be good for the club and for Welsh football in general." The striker will reportedly become the highest-paid Cardiff player in the club's history, with a £15,000-a-week salary and goal and appearance bonuses on top.

He is their sixth summer signing, following the arrivals of Trevor Sinclair, Gavin Rae, Steven MacLean, Tony Capaldi and Michael Oakes.

Fowler added: "People have said I'm past my best and I've heard other sorts of comments like that. But I'm in good shape again, I'm raring to go and I can't wait to get playing for Cardiff."
