‘Free’ Brown tops O’Neill wish list

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill will be at the head of the queue to sign Wes Brown if the England defender cannot resolve his contract dispute with Manchester United. The 28-year-old full-backhas rejected a £55,000-aweek offer at Old Trafford and could leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

O'Neill would not break Villa's pay structure for Brown but if the player was free he could effectively better United's offer with a signing-on fee. The Villa boss is desperate to sign a top-quality right-back to replace Olof Mellberg, who is going to Juventus.

Complaining: Wes Brown might be on his way out of Manchester United

Brown's wage demands provoked a sharp rebuke from United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who accused some players of 'living in the pockets of their agents'.
