French fancy lures Spurs

Tottenham have entered the race to sign highly-rated French defender Younes Kaboul from Auxerre this summer.

Club representatives were spotted at Auxerre's goalless draw against Lyon this month and boss Martin Jol is believed to have been one of them.

Transfer target: Auxerre defender Younes Kaboul is being pursued by Spurs and may warrant a fee of about £6m

Kaboul is tipped to soon become a France international having impressed for the Under-21s. Spurs are desperate to strengthen their defence as they have kept the fewest clean sheets in the Premiership this term and captain Ledley King has struggled with injury for 12 months.

Kaboul is understood to be ready to leave Auxerre but is deciding whether to move to another club in France or go abroad.

Lyon, Liverpool, Portsmouth and Fiorentina are also interested in signing the 21-year-old, who could cost up to £6million.

Tottenham's defence struggled again against Middlesbrough on Saturday after they went 2-0 up only to be hanging on for a 3-2 victory at the Riverside.

However, a fine brace from Robbie Keane and one from Dimitar Berbatov proved just enough to secure a crucial three points in the race for a UEFA Cup slot, with Mark Viduka and Emanuel Pogatetz scoring for the home side.
