Friction in Croatia squad as duo declare they aren't there to make up numbers

The competition for places in the Croatia side is clearly becoming a source of frustration for the squad's fringe players.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's meeting with Germany, striker Ivan Klasnic said: "I hope I will not be reduced to being a fan on the substitutes bench like in Euro 2004 in Portugal.

"I am really eager to start the match against Germany and I will play my heart out if selected.'"

Fellow forward Ivan Rakitic - who, ironically, is expected to replace the out-of-form Mladen Petric against the Germans in Klagenfurt - added: "I was a bit disappointed at being left on the bench for the full 90 minutes against Austria.

"I am not content to just be here and make up the numbers, I want to play and the staff know that.

"But it' s not my decision, of course, and we are here as a unit."
