Fulham axe Sanchez: Collins favourite for job but ex-Spurs boss Jol and Belgrade's Djukic also in the frame

While assistant managers Ray Lewington and Billy McKinlay were put in temporary charge for tomorrow's relegation clash at home to Wigan, ex-skipper Collins went to the top of a shortlist of candidates to become the club's third full-time manager in nine months.
Collins shocked Scottish side Hibernian, who he led to the CIS Cup last March, when he walked out on them yesterday but the 39-year-old, who ended his playing career at Fulham in 2003, insisted there had been no prior approach from Fulham owner Mohamed Fayed or his directors.
Down and out: Lawrie Sanchez has been sacked by Fulham following a run of five Premier League matches without a win
He said: "I can clarify there's been no contact from Fulham. They've got a manager, he's got a tough job right now and I wish him all the best."
But it is understood Collins is top of a shortlist that includes former Partizan Belgrade manager Miroslav Djukic and ex-Tottenham boss Martin Jol.
Fulham have won only two League games this season despite Sanchez spending nearly £26 million in the transfer market over the summer.
A Fulham statement said: "Following a run of disappointing results the club are languishing in the relegation zone, and losing Premier League status is a proposition that cannot be contemplated.
"We are confident we will find the right replacement to increase our chances of remaining in the Premier League, which is of vital importance."
