Fuming United boss Fergie facing FA rap after clashing with referee at Bolton

Sir Alex Ferguson looks set to be charged by the Football Association after his furious clash with referee Mark Clattenburg on Saturday.

The Manchester United boss was sent off and banished to the stands for the second half after a blistering verbal assault on the official as his side were shocked 1-0 at Bolton.

Open wide: Ferguson berates Clattenburg as Evra looks on

Ferguson argued in similar circumstances with Jeff Winter in an encounter with Newcastle at St James' Park in 2003.

That tirade earned him a £10,000 fine and a two-game touchline ban, although the FA will examine Clattenburg's report before asking the Scot to explain his behaviour.

Ferguson was livid with what he described as a lack of 'protection' for his players as Wanderers sealed their first home win over United for 29 years and ended his side's unbeaten ten-game run in the league.

Kevin Davies and United's Patrice Evra clashed frequently and, while Ferguson's players were slightly less confrontational in their comments, they were also angry with Clattenburg's performance.

"There were definitely a few borderline challenges in the game, especially one from Kevin Davies," insisted Owen Hargreaves.

"I don't mind physical games. That is why there is a referee out there but the referee struggled to keep the game under control."
