Galaxy bend the rules for Beckham

David Beckham and his new American club, LA Galaxy, will seek to bend the rules in a bid to allow him to continue his England career — and satisfy his new American paymasters.

But Beckham will be expected to do his bit by accepting an extraordinary transatlantic schedule in which he will play for England in Europe then appear with his Galaxy team-mates almost 6,000 miles away in the US all within the space of 36 hours.

Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas insists it is an honour for his club that Beckham has been recalled to the international fold, while England coach Steve McClaren has made plans to watch him play in his new home.

But Lalas is equally adamant that when England and Galaxy games all but coincide, Beckham, 32, will be expected at least to be present for his club's match and even to play, in order to satisfy fans of both the Galaxy and other teams who have bought tickets on the basis of him appearing.

Major League Soccer do not allow teams to charter aircraft to get to and from away games all over America, in a bid to prevent the richer clubs gaining an advantage. But Galaxy want to be a special case — although they insist it is for security reasons — so that Beckham, whom they are paying up to £125 million over the five years of his contract, will be able to play in all of their matches.

Galaxy's schedule has been built around waiting for Beckham's arrival, with the team struggling second from bottom of the Western Conference, having played five games fewer than leaders Houston.

Lalas said: 'There will be certain games when we do everything within our power to make sure that we keep our customers happy. He's been incredibly positive and supportive in saying that he will make every effort to get back to his primary responsibility, which is playing
