Gallas sidesteps ban over Nani kick

William Gallas has escaped a ban for kicking Nani off the ball during Manchester United's FA Cup fifth-round demolition of Arsenal.

Television pictures clearly showed Gallas kick Nani from behind after the Portuguese winger had teased Arsenal with some ball-juggling skills.

Squaring up: The FA will not take any further action following the FA Cup spat

Referee Alan Wiley missed the incident but, having reviewed video evidence, refused to condemn Gallas.

An FA spokesman said: "Having viewed the footage, the referee was not satisfied that it showed evidence of violent conduct and no further action will be taken."

Wiley would have had to deem the clash worthy of a red card for violent conduct for the FA to take action.

The let-off comes in the wake of Arsenal team-mates Emmanuel Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner escaping sanction for their ugly clash in the 5-1 Carling Cup semi-final defeat away to Tottenham last month.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had blasted Gallas's behaviour after the match, saying: "I thought Gallas should have been sent off. The referee must have a look at that again."

England manager Fabio Capello warned AC Milan they will find it tough against Arsenal in the Champions League tomorrow, saying: "Milan could not have got a worse proposition. Arsenal at this time are one of the very top teams in Europe."
