Ganga positive despite Headingley hell

With the series gone, the fourth Test at Chester-le-Street offers Ganga's team the chance to regain further pride.

Ready: West Indies captain Darren Ganga prepares to bat during nets at the Northumbria Cricket Centre in Gosforth
Although they went 2-0 down at Old Trafford earlier this week, there were signs of improvement in the 60-run defeat, having been blitzed twice for under 150 in the innings thrashing at Headingley.
Just as in Leeds, conditions up at the Riverside are expected to be overcast and damp and as such conducive to aerial and lateral movement, and West Indies captain Ganga has encouraged the tourists to share their knowledge of combat in the dressing room.
He said: "We were aware that the weather might play a part in this Test match - that is something beyond our control - we have the experience of Headingley behind us and we are aware of what the English players are capable of in their own conditions.
"We are trying to limit the number of mistakes we are making and stop making the same ones over and over again.
"That experience at Headingley will better prepare us for this if the weather comes in again. "We are not accustomed to it in the Caribbean, definitely not - playing in seven degrees is something new.
"Some of the guys are experienced in touring England before but it is very important we feed off one and other, a lot of talk has been going around our dressing room with regards to adapting, with regards to dealing with situations like this."
England enter the match needing victory to maintain their pre-series Test rating of 114 - any other result will see it decrease.
Chances of West Indies taking the dead rubber appear remote given their overall run of just two wins and 11 draws in 38 outings but they are forming a new-look side and the newest member Darren Sammy made quite an impact on debut at Old Trafford.
However, all-rounder Sammy is doubtful with a groin strain picked up after he claimed eight wickets and hit an accomplished 25.
The West Indian management are hoping the 23-year-old said can take his place in the XI while Daren Powell will pressurise the other fast bowlers for a recall.
"It was really tough leaving Daren Powell out, he has been one of our better bowlers over the past year so strong consideration will be given to him," said Ganga.
"We lacked a little bit of penetration in terms of getting 20 wickets early in the series but we were able to do that at Old Trafford.
"We actually created a lot more than 20 chances but weren't able to hold onto all.
"It could be a four-day Test match, we will have to factor in the conditions to come up with the right combinations for success in this game."
In all probability it is Ganga's last match on tour, with Chris Gayle having been proposed by the selectors as leader for the one-day campaign which follows.
West Indies' board originally vetoed that recommendation but with the squad likely to be revealed during the fourth Test, it is anticipated the board will renege on their decision.
"That is not something really playing on my mind at the moment," said Ganga, stand-in captain for the Test series due to Ramnaresh Sarwan's injury.
"I am just focusing on this Test match and my performance - which hasn't been good for the last two matches - balancing my role as captain and player as well.
"We are 2-0 down in the series against the second-best Test team in the world and losing 2-1 would be a lot better showing for a West Indian team."
