Gerrard happy to wait for his deal

Steven Gerrard may have to wait a little longer for his new £25million Liverpool contract, but he was assured on Tuesday there will be no repeat of the misunderstanding that almost brought his Anfield career to an abrupt halt two years ago.

The club captain's eagerness to end any uncertainty had echoes of his previous contract negotiations, when he misread a perceived lukewarm response from the club as a signal he was no longer wanted.

Just weeks after his Champions League Final heroics against AC Milan, Gerrardwas on the verge of joining Chelsea before pulling back at the last minute and signingafour-yeardealat Anfield.

As he prepared for another final showdown with Milan a week today, the 26-year old midfielder is aware agreement is close on personal terms of £120,000 a week over the next four seasons.

Manager Rafa Benitez said: "If it was just a matter of talking to the player, it would be done already, but you need to talk to other people.

"This is a different situation from two years ago. The big positive for me was to show Stevie and others that we want to keep them here.

"We've sent out that message and I believe Stevie has received it and is happy we have shown confidence in him.

"If it can't be finalised in one meeting in Murcia, we will do it after the final. But there's no pressure. It will be two friends trying to find an agreement."

Gerrard said: "As soon as the contract is put in front of me, I will sign it. I want my best days to be spent at Anfield and I'm ready to sign now.

"This is a really exciting time to be involved with Liverpool. There is a new stadium coming, financial backing off the pitch and the team are progressing well."

Jamie Carragher is close to agreeing a contract extension, while Steve Finnan, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso are all in line for new deals.

John Arne Riise, who has two years left on his current contract, also wants to pledge his long-term future to Anfield.
