Gerrard: I want new deal now

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard wants to sign a new contract immediately — but his manager Rafa Benitez is likely to make him wait until after the Champions League final on May 23.

Gerrard is anxious to avoid a repeat of his contract fiasco in 2005 when he nearly joined Chelsea. He was left feeling unwanted by the club's delay in offering him a deal after the epic Champions League final penalties win over AC Milan in Istanbul.

Only a late intervention by chief executive Rick Parry convinced him to stay and, with Milan on the horizon again, the 26-year-old does not want to go through the same drama once more.

Gerrard has two years of his contract remaining but wants £120,000 a week to pledge his future to Anfield for four years.

He said: "I'm ready to sign. I've had talks and I'm waiting for them to get back to me. I made the right decision last time — I always knew that."

Jamie Carragher, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso are also being offered new deals.
