Gerrard v Gattuso: So who was top dog and who was the pussycat?

It was the long-awaited showdown between Steven Gerrard and Gennaro Gattuso. I'd like to play him every week,' said Gerrard after the last meeting. So how did they fare in Athens last night?

ROUND ONE (15 mins)

With Gerrard playing in an advanced role behind Dirk Kuyt, the two No.8s avoid any early confrontation. The first poor tackle is made by Gattuso who goes in late on Agger and leaves his foot in. Riise is next to be fouled by the Italian. Gerrard stays on his feet, out of trouble.

Gattuso wins 50-50 with Gerrard and then follows through with a dreadful tackle on Riise. First blood to Liverpool as a stray boot from Zenden catches Gattuso in the face. He's off the pitch with a bloody nose. Wuss! First yellow to the Italian for cynical foul on Alonso after 40 minutes.

ROUND FOUR (70 mins) Gattuso is quiet, but effective. Gerrard is trying to get into the game, but Milan are sitting deep and filling the space with bodies. Tempers are fraying and three bookings are delivered, including Carragher and Javier Mascherano. Gattuso clashes with sub Kewell, but no foul is awarded.

ROUND FIVE (80 mins)

After Gerrard misses his big chance and Gattuso moved closer to the European Cup, Milan begin sitting deeper and protecting their back line, with Gattuso in his element. Come on then Stevie, what have you got? He looks frustrated at lack of penetration and must want Crouch to help.

THE VERDICT (90mins)

We expected a war, but it went with a whimper. Gattuso collected a booking — and a medal. Gerrard, in his advanced role, wasn't able to influence the game in the way he would have liked and had to watch as his fierce rival went into cruise control. Only one winner in this battle'.
