Ghaly faces wrath of Jol after shirt protest

Spurs grabbed a 1-1 draw at soggy White Hart Lane, meaning they only need a point to reach the UEFA Cup in consecutive seasons, but Ghaly's reaction left fans raging.

The 25-year-old was brought on in the first half after an injury to Steed Malbranque but lasted just 31 minutes before Robbie Keane replaced him as Spurs chased an equaliser.

Ghaly threw his shirt on the ground in front of boss Martin Jol, who turned around as his Egypt midfielder went straight down the tunnel. Jol confirmed Ghaly was not in the dressing room after the final whistle.

"We always deal with this sort of thing," said Jol.

"We have certain rules and arrangements, whether it is Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane or Jermain Defoe or Hossam Ghaly, it's no different to me so we will deal with that internally."

Spurs supporters gave their own assessment, singing "your not fit to wear the shirt".

Jol added: "The fans are entitled to do that. Literally, it was out of character because he is a very good boy, he's always disciplined and every time he was involved he did well but you couldn't say he did well this time."

Blackburn needed a win to keep alive their hopes of a direct route to the UEFA Cup and looked on course for three points when Benni McCarthy headed them ahead in the first half.

They could have doubled the lead after the break when Christopher Samba headed against the crossbar but Spurs dragged themselves back into the game with the help of Keane.

The equaliser came with 23 minutes remaining after the Republic of Ireland captain fed Dimitar Berbatov, whose shot was parried before Jermain Defoe tapped in.

Jason Roberts was furious with referee Rob Styles after being sent off for two injury-time bookings, the first for fouling Didier Zokora and the second for complaining.

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes said: "I was trying to say 'see the bigger picture' to the referee. At that stage, there was no need to send Jason off.

"He would think he said something but Jason is adamant he never swore at the referee. I thought it was completely ridiculous."

Blackburn can still qualify for Europe through the Intertoto Cup, with Hughes adding: "We've applied for it and it was always an option."
