Gibson snubs Boro's flops

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson was so angry in the wake of the club's 2-0 FA Cup defeat by Cardiff that he stayed away from the training ground on Monday to avoid the well-paid players whose wages he covers.

'He is the club's biggest fan and every fan was angry,' said manager Gareth Southgate. 'He was very angry but very supportive. He was less than impressed.'

Gibson will, of course, stand by his manager and the players found Southgate in equally forgiving and rational mood as he prepared for their match at Aston Villa on Wednesday.

'Too many of them did not perform to their best on Sunday, but I have an honest group who know that. There is disappointment, anger and pain,' he said.

'They know when they have not delivered. They dug in for me earlier in the season when people were looking for me to be out of this job, so I won't hang them out to dry now.

'You feel like your guts have been ripped from inside you after a game like that — and it was at home. It's like someone has been in your house and taken your possessions away.'

But with 10 games to ensure their Barclays Premier League safety, Boro have no time to feel sorry for themselves.

Southgate added: 'We have to repair relations with the supporters. We have to perform in our last 10 games to regain their trust.

'We can rip ourselves apart and hide and finish our season now or we can come out fighting and make a stronger team and a stronger club which has learned from the experience.'
