Thierry Henry, who left for Barcelona, was Arsenal's official captain last season but the 30-year-old Brazilian skippered Arsene Wenger's side for much of last season in the absence of the injured Frenchman.
Last season's captain Gilberto Silva is 'surprised' Arsene Wenger didn't tell him of his decision
Wenger handed the armband to William Gallas last week and Gilberto has revealed his shock that he only found out Wenger had snubbed him for the captaincy via the internet.
He said: "Of course I was surprised, because I was captain all last season when Henry didn't play, and after his move to Barcelona I naturally thought I would be this time.
"Arsene is the manager and it is his decision and I have to accept that. Life goes on and I will get on with my job like I always have.
"But I was surprised he didn't speak to me about his decision. He had the time to do it because I was at the training ground before it was made public.
"He didn't say anything to me and I just found out about it that evening when I saw it on the website.
"I wasn't upset about not being captain, but I was about the way I learned about it."
He added: "I will give the same commitment to the club that I always have. This is an important season."
Arsenal play Sparta Prague tomorrow in a Champions League qualifier and will without injured Togo forward Emmanuel Adebayor. Wenger said that new arrival Eduardo da Silva had a "50-50 chance" of making his competitive debut.
Adebayor has been out for a fortnight with a groin problem while Eduardo picked up a knee injury just before the start of the season.
Sparta yesterday sold Czech under-20 international defender Jan Simunek to German club Wolfsburg for £4million.
