Gilberto is left fearing for future

Gilberto Silva fears his dream of ending his career at Arsenal has been shattered by the emergence of Arsene Wenger's new generation.

Mathieu Flamini, Lassana Diarra and Abou Diaby are all vying for the central midfield berth alongside Cesc Fabregas and Gilberto is reluctant to convert into central defence.

Gilberto has found games hard to come by this season

Juventus are preparing a bid in January for the 31-year-old Brazilian, who signed from Atletico Mineiro for £4.5million in 2002 and has 18 months left on his current contract.

Gilberto, who played in midfield against Slavia Prague on Tuesday as Arsenal drew 0-0 to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, said: "It's not just down to me.

"It would be great if I could extend my contract and finish my career here, but I need to see if the club have the same feeling and want the same thing as I want.

"I've said that I'm happy at the club. Of course my situation is not very comfortable on the bench but I'm still not thinking about leaving. I prefer to think I can get back in the team.

"We'll see. I hope it won't affect my international career, but when you play for Brazil and you are not playing for your team it is quite difficult to manage the situation. It is down to me to keep calm, keep patient and wait for my chance again."

Gilberto's hopes of an extended run appear better in central defence because the Gunners will lose Kolo Toure to the African Cup of Nations in January, but he is determined to keep playing in midfield.
