Giovani will soon move to a better team than Tottenham, insists Arsenal's Mexican striker Carlos Vela

Arsenal striker Carlos Vela believes his international team-mate Giovani Dos Santos will use his move to Tottenham as a stepping stone to greater things.

Vela, who has yet to appear for the Gunners after spending the last two seasons on loan at Celta Vigo, Salamanca and Osasuna in Spain, came to prominence alongside Giovani when the two spearheaded Mexico's strikeforce in the country's Under 17 World Cup triumph in 2005.

Vela signed for Arsenal shortly after that tournament, but was forced to go out on loan due to work permit requirements.

Giovani was already contracted to Barcelona at that point and looked set to follow in the illustrious footsteps of fellow youth team graduate Lionel Messi.

However, following a difficult debut season with the Catalan club, the Mexico forward was transferred to Tottenham last week in a deal which could be worth up to 11 million euros (£8.8million).

"I am happy for him," Vela said.

"I hope things go well for him at Tottenham, that he gets the minutes he wasn't given at Barcelona and that he shows what he can do.

"He is a very good player and let's hope he can then move on to a better team."
