Glazers quick to toast United's success - Gill
07 May 2007
Vanquished Chelsea had barely left the Emirates Stadium pitch following their 1-1 draw with Arsenal when Glazer made his trans-Atlantic call to celebrate the first trophy of major significance the Red Devils have won since his father Malcolm completed his controversial takeover in 2005.

Absolute delight: Sir Alex Ferguson leaps into the arms of assistant Carlos Quieroz
The Glazer family had been keeping in touch with events at Arsenal from their Florida home and, given so many doom-merchants predicted United's demise under the Americans' ownership, Gill believes they have every right to revel in the Old Trafford outfit's success.
"Joel rang me last night to express his congratulations to everyone at the club," Gill told BBC Radio Five Live.
"All the doomsayers who said we would be in trouble have been proved wrong.
"They have brought a stability to the club and stability is the key element of any football club.
"They have got involved with areas they think they can add value with and let Alex (Ferguson, manager) and the rest of us get on with the football side of it.
"They are delighted (to win the Premiership), they're sports fans and they know what running a sports team is all about."
Much like Ferguson, Gill spent the final 15 minutes of the game pacing up and down his living room pleading with the Arsenal players to hang on as 10-man Chelsea launched their valiant late offensive.
In the end, the Londoners efforts proved in vain, allowing United to celebrate their 16th league title - and their ninth under Ferguson.
The success is more improbably given Ferguson's men spent the previous two seasons trailing in Chelsea's wake and were facing opponents supposedly strengthened beyond measure by the arrivals of Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko, while United's only summer recruit was Michael Carrick.
"All the pundits were saying Liverpool would be Chelsea's main challengers this season," Gill recalled.
"But we rely on the person who has done it many times over many years, and Sir Alex Ferguson has proved his critics wrong again.
"He is the person who makes the decisions and he was comfortable with the squad.
"If he had wanted more money for players, we would have given it to him. Everyone has their view of things - but his is the critical one."
Gill confirmed the Premiership trophy would be handed out to United after Sunday's final match against West Ham at Old Trafford.
