'I don't know if Lampard will go to Inter Milan,' said Capello. 'It is up to him to decide. But for every new experience you are richer.'

Chelsea were at the centre of yet more speculation last night, with much of it centred on the fact that Stamford Bridge chief executive Peter Kenyon is in Italy.

It has been suggested he could be making one last attempt to persuade Carlo Ancelotti to become the club's new manager or might even be there to negotiate a deal that sees Didier Drogba head to AC Milan and Kaka move to Chelsea.

They would be less keen to sell Lampard, and new contract talks are expected to begin once the midfielder returns from holiday.

Who comes in as manager - Luiz Felipe Scolari is the clear favourite - could have an influence on the outcome of those discussions.

But Capello is not concerned, as long as key members of his squad play regular first-team football. He said: 'It's very important to see the players every week. It's better for us if they play regularly because players are fit if they play every game.'

Capello also revealed that Dean Ashton would be given another chance to impress after a difficult international debut against Trinidad.

'Always when you are playing for the national team, it is not easy in your first game,' said Capello. 'He will be with us for the next games as long as he is fit.'

Capello seems to have narrowed down his choice of captain to Rio Ferdinand or John Terry.

He said: 'I have two candidates for captain and have not decided. I will make the decision in the last week, I think on August 10.'

He believes the side has improved over his four games in charge, saying: 'When I started the first game against Switzerland it was not easy because I saw a lot of problems; there was no confidence and they did not play like they do for their clubs.

'Now I am very happy because, step-by-step, we are moving along and we play better in every game.'

Barcelona midfielder Deco, meanwhile, confirmed he is deciding whether to move to Chelsea or Inter Milan, who have just appointed Jose Mourinho, his former coach at Porto.
