'God' squad joy for Chasetown's FA Cup hero Smith

Danny Smith loves being Chasetown's FA Cup hero — but his goal which saw off Port Vale has given him the chance to do some serious hero worship of his own.

The 19-year-old student's reward for knocking out the League One strugglers is a meeting with Cardiff City — and his idol Robbie Fowler — in the third round.

Instead of having to offer up a nightly prayer in his bedroom to a statue of the striker still referred to as 'God' by Liverpool fans, Smith is set to come face to face with the Cardiff hitman.

'To get Robbie down here is a dream. I'm a Liverpool fan and he has always been my idol. I try to model myself on him,' said Smith, who is studying an HND in sport and leisure management.

His 89th-minute winner gave British Gas Midland side Chasetown their first crack at the third round in their 53-year history.

The tie with Cardiff, scheduled for January 5, could be moved from Chasetown's Scholars Ground in Burntwood, Staffordshire, over safety fears.

On the same day, Walsall host Millwall, 10 miles away, and nearby Wolves play Cambridge at Molineux.

But Smith said: 'I want the game here. It's the heart of Chasetown and you can see what it meant to all the fans.'
