Going for a Burton: Savage's days at Derby are over

Facing exit: Derby's Savage

Robbie Savage seems to be on his way out of Derby after just six months.

The former Blackburn and Birmingham midfielder was stunned to find himself on the bench for last night's friendly at Burton Albion.

Savage's place already appeared to be under threat when manager Paul Jewell made a failed bid for Swansea's Ferrie Bodde earlier this month.

But last night he discovered he is behind Dean Leacock in the pecking order as Jewell sent out his new-look team against Nigel Clough's men.

Derby want to move big earners off the wage bill and Savage is still on Premier League money following his move from Blackburn in January.

Savage struggled to make an impact at Pride Park and upset teammates by splashing out on a £160,000 Mercedes supercar as they battled unsuccessfully to stave off relegation from the top flight.

Derby may even be willing to let Savage move on loan in a bid to ship him out before the new season.

Bolton are considering a move for Derby left back Jay McEveley but have turned down a £1million bid from West Bromwich Albion for Ivory Coast defender Abdoulaye Meite.
