Golovin gone, pants and all, as Ivanovic backs Henin

The chance to see Tatiana Golovin's red knickers is over — at least for another year — as the French 17th seed went out in the second round.

Golovin, whose risqué underwear earned her worldwide celebrity for a day, caught the attention for an entirely different reason as she slumped to 16-year-old Tamira Paszek of Austria 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The world No 54, who took Maria Sharapova to three sets in Birmingham, enhanced her fast-growing reputation to earn a meeting with Elena Dementieva.

As for Golovin, part of her problem may have been her phlegmatic approach to it all as, even in defeat, she continued to charm her new legion of admirers.

"Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose," she said with a shrug.

Following her out was No 13 seed Dinara Safina.

The 21-year-old sister of former world No 1 Marat Safin lost 6-4, 7-5 to 27-year-old Akiko Morigami, who has never been beyond the third round and now faces Venus Williams.

The American threetime champion saw off Czech hopeful Hana Sromova 6-2, 6-2 in just 51 minutes to banish the memory of her firstround struggle against Russian outsider Alla Kudryavtseva.

Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo also cruised through, 6-1, 6-2 against Austria's Yvonne Meusburger in under an hour on Court Two and then insisted she didn't mind that she's managed to keep a low profile so far.

Gone: Golovin

"The attention is so high at the French Open that the difference always shows when I'm here," she said. "It's always easier for me here. It's been like this for years and I enjoy it."

No 2 seed Sharapova was just as clinical in overwhelming France's Severine Bremond 6-0, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Ai Sugiyama, whom she beat en route to the 2004 title.

Sharapova, who has been nursing a shoulder problem, said: "I have played a lot of matches in the last couple of weeks and I'm happy with how I'm playing.

"When I am on court I just have to think about myself and not have worries. I have to be in a bubble and not worry about the injury."

Sixth seed Ana Ivanovic made light of the challenge of Meilen Tu 6-4, 6-3 and now faces France's Aravane Rezai, who beat 29th seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

The 19-year-old Serb, who has yet to lose a set, said: "There are many players at the moment that can win this tournament. At this point I think everyone can beat everyone.

"It's exciting for women's tennis. It's very exciting for us. But I still think players like Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo are the favourites."
