Goosen pulls out of Qatar Masters for emergency eye surgery in London

Retrief Goosen rushed from Qatar to London yesterday to have an emergency eye operation after a setback with his latest bout of laser surgery. The two-time U.S. Open winner had been planning to make his seasonal comeback today as the defending champion at the Qatar Masters, but the 38-year-old South African suffered blurred vision in his left eye after arriving at the course to practise.
After using his private jet to seek medical advice in nearby Dubai on Tuesday, he was told to leave for London immediately for more laser treatment.
Like Tiger Woods, Goosen was one of golf's pioneers seven years ago when he first underwent laser eye surgery, believing it would help his putting in particular.
It was his decision to go back for a 'touch-up' earlier this month that led toyesterday's scare.
Goosen said: "The eye is causing problems. I thought it would come good but it hasn't. There has been a bit of growth with fibre in the left eye."
A spokesman for his management company said: "It has been a worry but Retief hopes it should all be cured within seven to 10 days."
Goosen's absence from Qatar should not detract too much from a strong tournament featuring nine of the world's top 25 players. Sergio Garcia starts the year insisting that he is not haunted by the nightmare of his final round collapse in The Open at Carnoustie.
Having led by three going into the final day, Garcia lost a play-off to Padraig Harrington and the 28-year-old has now finished in the top 10 in 13 Majors, without ever winning.
Hesaid: "The Carnoustie disappointment was short term, but the education long term."
