Gordon sees the sights in Sunderland as Keane eyes £9m switch

Craig Gordon was shown around the Stadium of Light yesterday as Sunderland looked to complete a £9million deal for the Hearts goalkeeper and head off competition from Aston Villa.

Sportsmail revealed last month that Sunderland had tabled the British record bid for a keeper, but Villa had emerged as rivals for the 24-year-old the Scotland keeper.

Sunderland manager Roy Keane is looking for a late surge in the transfer market with Tottenham striker Mido, Portsmouth's Andrew Cole and Manchester United defender Jonny Evans all in his sights as he looks to take his spending this summer beyond £30m.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is wrestling with his conscience before splashing out. As well as Gordon, O'Neill has been linked with £10m-rated West Bromwich defender Curtis Davies. And with Mark Delaney on the verge of retiring due to a chronic knee injury, the boss also wants an experienced right-back.

"Some things have gone beyond the pale in terms of transfer fees,' said O'Neill. 'I know that at some stage I will have to do something which is against the grain."
