Guscott's swipe at 'lucky' Farrell
14 August 2007
England head coach Ashton included the 32-year-old in his squad despite the injury-hit Saracens centre having played only four Tests since his switch from rugby league to the union code in 2005.
Centre of attention: Andy Farrell's selection has divided Jeremy Guscott and Richard Hill
Former England centre Guscott, said: "I am surprised Farrell is going. I think the experiment, as I would call it, with Andy has run its course.
"Once upon a time he was a world-class player and obviously has a great reputation in rugby league. But, given what he has done in union to date, I think he can count himself very fortunate to be going on this trip."
Guscott feels Ashton should have omitted Farrell from the 30-man squad in favour of one of Dan Cipriani, Toby Flood or Nick Abendanon, who all missed the cut.
"They are youngsters and have got time on their side, and people may say they can go in four years," Guscott said. "But what a great experience it would be for them to go now."
However, World Cup winner Richard Hill is convinced Farrell can make a major impact at next month's tournament in France.
Hill has spent nearly two years working alongside Farrell as both players battled to overcome serious injury at Saracens.
The flanker said: "Everyone was confident about the skills he was going to bring to union from league and all Faz needed was an extended period without injury to show what he can do.
"Thankfully, he hasn't had to visit the physio's room at the England team hotel and is getting the game time he was looking for to prove what a quality player he is.
"He is a very strong leader on the pitch and influential about how the team is going to perform. Everyone wants to play in a World Cup and I am sure that chance was a major reason for Faz coming over to union.
"Having got into the squad, and knowing his character, his aim will be to make the starting XV and I believe he can make a real impact."
Meanwhile, London Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan is surprised James Haskell missed out.
"I feel particularly for him, as I thought he would make it to the final 30," said McGeechan. "He has so much to offer and, with his power and pace, he can really deliver what England are trying to achieve."
However, the Wasps chief is delighted Lawrence Dallaglio will get the chance to play in his third successive World Cup.
"There is no doubt Lawrence has proved himself in every way on the biggest stages, not just on the field but also with what he brings to the team environment," he said.
"His inclusion has vindicated the way we've managed him at Wasps over the past 12 months, particularly in the second half of last season when he became more effective with every game. I've no doubt that, as a player and a leader, he will deliver for England."
Wasps, with seven players, have the highest representation of any club in the England squad.
In addition, hooker Raphael Ibanez will captain France while scrum half Eoin Reddan and forward Dan Leo have been named for Ireland and Samoa respectively.
