After sacking Jurgen Klinsmann as coach yesterday, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said a new man must be found who "earns the respect of the players."

Beckenbauer believes Hiddink is such a man, even though he knows the Chelsea boss is unavailable as he will return to his Russia job fulltime this summer.

"I hope we can get a coach who is somewhere in the class of Guus Hiddink," he said.

Klinsmann was sacked after a poor run in the Bundesliga and Bayern's humiliating Champions League exit to Barcelona.

The Germans were thumped 4-0 at home in the first leg of the quarter-final but Barca midfielder Xavi believes the semi-final with Chelsea will go right to the wire.

He said: "These ties are usually decided in the second game. Whatever happens tonight, it'll all be decided at Stamford Bridge."
