Habana in a hurry to reach milestone

The fact that Bryan Habana didn't score a try during South Africa's 36-0 mauling of England a month ago must be regarded as a blip. He plans to prove as much in Saturday's World Cup Final and eclipse Jonah Lomu in the process.

Paul Sackey might not be sleeping much between now and then. It is likely to be his job to mark the Springboks' turbo-charged wing — a task that has proved beyond most of the opponents he has encountered, as the bare facts of his career illustrate.

Turbo charged: Bryan Habana flies over the line to seal one of his tries against Argentina

Habana has scored 30 tries in his 34 Tests, a strike rate surpassed only by New Zealand's flying Fijian Joe Rokocoko.

On Sunday, he touched down twice to help his side to a 37-13 win over Argentina, taking his tournament tally to eight. That put him level with the World Cup record set by Lomu in 1999 and the 24-year-old is primed to set a new mark at England's expense.

'It's great to equal the record, I'm really chuffed,' he said. 'But what's more important is that I've been contributing to the Springbok plan. I'm looking forward to making more contributions on Saturday.'

Any assessment of how to contain Habana can draw only one logical conclusion: don't let him have the ball. Given any space he is lethal, thanks to the pace which prompted a man-versus-beast race with a cheetah.

For his first try against the Pumas, he was body-checked and had his shirt pulled, but still scorched away.

He scored his first Springbok try within five minutes of making his Test debut as a replacement against England at Twickenham in 2004 and marked his first World Cup game with four more against Samoa.
