Hammers rage at 'needless' tackle on Dyer

While Kieron Dyer lay in hospital yesterday awaiting surgery, the feud over the tackle which broke his right leg in two places continued between West Ham and Bristol Rovers.

Since making his debut for Ipswich in 1996 three days before his 18th birthday, Dyer has played an average of about 30 games per season. Most of his injuries have been of the niggling variety — shin splints, hamstring and groin strains.

It all adds up to a career that is in danger of being characterised as 'what might have been'.

He received further support from the unlikely source of Lee Bowyer — the man he famously fought with on the pitch during their Newcastle days.

Bowyer said: 'Kieron is going to be a big loss for us. For this to happen is terrible luck. Me and Kieron get on well. What happened at Newcastle was a heat of the moment thing. It wasn't personal. We got on before and still do now.'

Jacobson, meanwhile, received more backing from his teammates after being criticised after the match by West Ham boss Alan Curbishley. The 20-year-old preferred not to comment on the incident yesterday but Rovers striker Richard Walker insisted that the tackle was not malicious.

'Once everyone has seen it again on television they will see it was a freak accident,' said Walker. 'I'm sure that Joe will contact him and wish him all the best.'
