Haradasun finishes with a flourish to land the Queen Anne Stakes
17 June 2008
Royal Ascot, Tuesday, Queen Anne Stakes (2.30) 1m
1. Haradasun 5-1
2. Darjina 5-1
3. Finsceal Beo 9-2 fav
Aidan O'Brien was keen to ensure that they went a good gallop here as the steady early pace didn't help his Australian import Haradasun in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on his first outing for present connections last month.
He pictched Honoured Guest in as a pacemaker and the colt fulfilled the role to the letter, ensuring a generous pace and setting the race up nicely for the strong-finishing Haradasun.
The five-year-old appeared to be a bit outpaced when the tempo increased three furlongs out, but he responded well to Johnny Murtagh's urgings and got up close home to beat the fillies Darjina and Finsceal Beo, both of whom had every chance but could not repel Haradasun, who had the benefit of racing up the stands rail.

Murtagh commented after the race: "The last day was a bit messy. They went no pace and he was a bit keen and keen to the start, but today went well.
"We moved off the rails and we got a nice slip through and I knew him better today. I knew over a stiff mile with plenty of pace on he would be hard to beat.
"He's very tough and genuine and they are trained and ridden hard in Australia and I knew he'd improve from the Lockinge.
"He takes a few strides to get into gear, but once he gets going he's relentless."
The hard luck story of the race was Cesare, who was going well two furlongs out but was trapped behind a wall of horses and Jamie Spencer had to sit and suffer as the race unfolded in front of him.
Whether James Fanshawe's charge would have won is debatable, but he was most certainly unlucky.
Sageburg and Tariq both had every chance and loomed up at around the two furlong market but neither could sustain their effort close home.
