Harmy upstages Flintoff

Steve Harmison bowled with pace and hostility to inspire Durham to victory over Lancashire yesterday - and had the last laugh over his great friend Andrew Flintoff.

Harmison, making a mockery of his decision to retire from one-day international cricket, consistently produced deliveries in excess of 90mph and dismissed Lancashire captain Mark Chilton and Dominic Cork during Durham's 57-run victory in the Friends Provident Trophy at Chester-le-Street.

Full stretch: but Flintoff fails to hold a sharp caught-and-bowed chance

But his best moment came when Flintoff, having reached 11 off 21 balls, tried to hit the off-spin of Gareth Breese into the stands and instead found Harmison's safe hands at deep mid-wicket.

Flintoff had earlier produced some hostile bowling himself and cut his England team-mate Paul Collingwood's innings short at 74.

Flintoff's Lancashire and England colleagues Jimmy Anderson and Saj Mahmood took two wickets apiece but the only other bowler who came close to matching Harmison for expertise was Liam Plunkett.

Elsewhere, Owais Shah strengthened his case for inclusion in the first Test against West Indies at Lord's next week with an unbeaten 95 for Middlesex against Kent, while Kevin Pietersen returned to action for Hampshire with 66 not out in the eight-wicket victory over Ireland.
