Harry to defy Boro warning over Downing

Spurs have made a third bid of £14.5million for Downing but Boro chief executive Keith Lamb today issued a statement insisting the 24-year-old England international will not be leaving The Riverside in the January transfer window.
Spurs manager Redknapp is determined to transform his squad and has already demonstrated his willingness to spend by bringing striker Jermain Defoe back to White Hart Lane yesterday for £16m, but Lamb said: "We again reiterate that no senior players will be leaving this football club during January. That is the end of the matter."
Spurs offered to pay £12.5m up front for Downing, who has racked up over 200 games for Boro since making his debut for the club in April 2002, with the remaining £2m due in instalments of £200,000 for every 30 matches that the winger plays.
Boro are holding out for £15m in one lump sum but may alter their stance if — as appears likely — they simply cannot persuade Downing that his future lies with his home-town club.
Downing's father, Stewart Sr, spent much of yesterday in talks with Lamb, Boro chairman Steve Gibson and manager Gareth Southgate.
The Boro hierarchy were hoping to persuade Downing to withdraw his transfer request until the summer and concentrate on helping them win their fight against relegation.
Unlike Defoe, the 24-year-old would not be eligible to play in the Carling Cup Final should Tottenham safely negotiate the second leg against Burnley in a fortnight.
Holders Spurs fought back from a goal down to win last night's first leg at White Hart Lane 4-1, making them the clear favourites to meet either Derby or Manchester United in the final at Wembley.
