The 36-year-old's search for silverware in the English domestic game goes on for another season after the Bluebirds' hopes of a fairytale ending at Wembley were dashed by Portsmouth yesterday.

"I have got an option for another year with Cardiff and I'm 99.9% sure I will take it," the former Chelsea, Leeds and Holland striker said.

Defeat will have been particularly difficult to swallow for the Dutchman as it could well prove to be his last shot at winning a major trophy.

For a player who spent much of his career playing at the highest level, it may come as a surprise Hasselbaink's only major prize came in the Portuguese Cup during his days with Boavista.

Yesterday was the second time he has collected an FA Cup runners-up medal after suffering similar disappointment with Chelsea in 2002.

And he admitted defeat was all the more galling considering the circumstances in which City conceded.

Goalkeeper Peter Enckelman spilled John Utaka's 37th-minute cross and Kanu was on hand to punish the mistake, firing in from close range.

"A lot of decisions didn't go our way," Hasselbaink said.

"I think we showed really good character, lost the game by a silly mistake. It's always harder to lose the game like that.

"If they score a screamer, you clap and leave it like that but it wasn't."

The result gave Portsmouth a first FA Cup triumph in 69 years, ensuring the Bluebirds' fairytale run to their first final since 1927 ended in disappointment.

But Hasselbaink insisted the Coca-Cola Championship side had given Harry Redknapp's Barclays Premier League outfit a scare.

He added: "We frightened them but they still go home with the cup and that hurts."
