HATCHET MAN: What a travesty United's mean defence won no gongs in Monaco, when Terry and Cech (!?) were honoured

The managers who voted on Uefa's individual player gongs handed out at the Champions League draw in Monte Carlo yesterday got it so wrong.

Winners Manchester United boasted the tightest defence in last season's Champions League, conceding just six goals in an unbeaten tournament. But were there awards for Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic, the meanest centre backs around, or goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, who saved the decisive shoot-out penalty in the final?

Not a bit of it. The combined judgement of the managers of the teams who reached the last 16 was that the best defender in the competition was Chelsea's John Terry, who crucially missed in the shoot-out. And his team-mate Petr Cech raised eyebrows when he picked up the best keeper award.

If that wasn't bad enough, the midfield prize went to another Chelsea player: Frank Lampard. The efforts of Steven Gerrard, whose six goals almost single-handedly took Liverpool to the semi-finals and were bettered only by Ronaldo, were completely overlooked.

Sir Alex Ferguson's views clearly didn't hold sway, but there was at least one consolation ... UEFA didn't strike a medal Peter Kenyon and robbed him of the chance to reprise his Moscow moment.
