HATCHET MAN: Why I'm not laughing as Brian Barwick shuffles off over the slapstick horizon

There may not be too many people saying it today, but Brian Barwick will be sorely missed at the FA.

Not for his expertise in brokering a deal (Luiz Felipe Scolari would be England manager now if the chief executive hadn't approached negotiations like a bull in a china shop) or identifying talent (he was key in the making of the Wally with the Brolly). No, they were just a couple of the fine messes he got us into.

But Barwick will be missed for his comedy potential when the country's fans look like they will need it most.

As England struggle a bit of comedy slapstick from the Oliver Hardy lookalike could lighten the mood. Hatchet Man thinks there was potential too for Fabio Capello to take the role of sidekick Stan Laurel. He certainly looked clueless last night .

PS. One of sports writing's most well-respected scribes claimed today that Lord Triesman 'saw Barwick as lightweight from the start'. The FA's new independent chairman must have been using one of those joke mirrors at Soho Square.
