He hates hairy shins and white shirts but can erect three-storey buildings - just what makes Capello tick?

Fabio Capello has apparently already got his excuses ready for England's failures - he does not like white shirts.

The Italian has declared a dislike for white shirts — perhaps somebody from the FA should have warned him it is the first choice colour of our national team.

But there are far more bizarre ideas about life, football and decorum from the man who appears not to suffer fools gladly - including a pathological hatred of hairy shins!

Don't do as I say, do as I tutu: Capello has strong views about most things

And if there are any problems with Wembley Stadium in the future, the FA can relax as Capello is qualified in surveying and would no doubt be delighted to offer a few handy hints.

Listed below are a few quirks and beliefs that make the next England manager tick.

CAPELLO ON...

FASHION

"I choose my own clothes — informal sports jackets or Italian sweaters. I opt for harmony, balance and I think I've got quite good taste. But I'm not vain.

"I don't like white shirts, I prefer blue and I just can't stand ankle socks. When a gentleman crosses his legs and the trouser leg rides up to show hairy shins at the top of the sock, it offends my eyes. It's like women wearing their stockings rolled down around their ankles Both would be a real turn-off."

ON ART

"Art makes me passionate. I particularly like the 'Black' period in Goya's career or some of Velazquez's best work — he was the first impressionist in art history. Walking round great art like that boosts your spirits."

ON WORLD TRAVEL

"It's not that I'm hedonistic, loving travel, good wine, fine Spanish 'jamon' (ham) and good clothes. It's just that I don't want to be ignorant in this life. I'm not a tourist, I'm a traveller."

ON WORK

"In terms of work I can be a bit of a horror. One thing I know, clearly, is that success only comes with regular, consistent hard work.

"I live for repeat success. One single success doesn't inspire me. If you distract yourself reflecting with satisfaction on a single moment of triumph then you won't achieve any others.

"In my house I don't keep one single trophy, one single photograph of great moments. They are all saved away carefully in cases and boxes.

"I don't treasure the successes I've achieved in the past years. I'm hungry, not nostalgic."

ON ARCHITECTURE

"I'm qualified in surveying. It's a bit below being an architect but I'm qualified to certify buildings which are up to three storeys high."

ON FAMILY

"Football has dominated my life but we've a family rule in the house — football talk is banned!"

ON CAPTAINS

"A coach must create a team discipline and then leave room for the individual qualities of the best players within that team discipline.

"In my teams I've had many, many leaders but only three of them were ever strikers — Marco Van Basten, Raul and Alex del Piero.

"It is difficult for a striker to become a leader because the selfish part of his soul must always come out."
