Heat is on Mustard as England get set for one-day shake-up

Phil Mustard and Graeme Swann were last night anxiously waiting to hear whether they have a part to play in England's one-day future as Geoff Miller emerged from a five-hour selection meeting focused on the problem areas of wicketkeeping and spin.

Miller, the national selector, today names England's 14-man squad for a Twenty20 match and five one-day internationals against New Zealand next month after promising continuity but talking of "the odd area that needs our attention".

Much of England's one-day cricket has been good in the year since Peter Moores took over as coach, but a 3-1 series defeat by New Zealand in February means England need to make one or two changes to try to exact revenge over the Black Caps.

Mustard, Durham's pinch-hitting wicketkeeper, has made only one half-century in the 10 matches since he was chosen ahead of Matt Prior and could be vulnerable to the introduction of Test keeper Tim Ambrose to the one-day side.

Swann was preferred to Monty Panesar in the successful one-day series in Sri Lanka before Christmas but was ignored by England after the second of their five internationals in New Zealand and became the forgotten man of the tour.

Now England may give Panesar another chance to showhe can thrive at one-day as well as Test level.

The claims have also been considered of James Tredwell, impressive with Kent and a nonplaying tourist in New Zealand, and the exciting Adil Rashid.

Dimitri Mascarenhas is almost certain to be included despite missing three of Hampshire's Friends Provident Trophy matches to play in the Indian Premier League, but there will be no places for the perceived Twenty20 specialists who flopped at the World Cup in South Africa.

Miller has no concerns about the one-day captain Paul Collingwood, who will be named to lead the side despite suffering a chronic lack of form and a persistent shoulder problem.

POSSIBLE ONE-DAY SQUAD: Collingwood (capt), Ambrose (wkt), Cook, Wright, Pietersen, Bell, Shah, Bopara, Mascarenhas, Broad, Sidebottom, Anderson, Panesar, Tremlett.
