Heat on Cook to deliver new players after Corluka is sold to Spurs

Manchester City executive chairman Garry Cook will come under pressure to splash out on new signings when he returns from Beijing next week, following the imminent £6million transfer of Croatia defender Vedran Corluka to Tottenham.

Corluka was left out of the City side who played AC Milan in a prestigious preseason friendly at Eastlands yesterday and is expected to soon complete his move to Spurs, where he will join up with international team-mate Luka Modric.

City boss Mark Hughes will want to spend the money quickly and his top target is Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz, whom he brought to England from Bayern Munich 12 months ago. Cook has been in China with owner Thaksin Shinawatra hoping to find new investors as financial uncertainty grips the club.

City claim they will be signing a number of new players before the transfer deadline once they receive their television revenue for the new season.

Shinawatra has been promising big-name signings since he took over the club last year. But a wellpublicised attempt to sign Ronaldinho ended in failure and his estimated £800m fortune is still frozen in Thailand.

Last week Pojaman Shinawatra, Thaksin's wife, was sentenced to three years in jail for evading millions of pounds in tax in a shares deal. Meanwhile, Fulham ended their pre-season campaign on a sour note, leaving manager Roy Hodgson to tear into his
