Heineken Cup safe, says Millar

The Heineken Cup will be saved this week after breakthrough talks between England's top clubs and the RFU that could cost the union £10 million a year.

The two sides have been at loggerheads for almost a decade, culminating in the threat from clubs in England and France to boycott next season's competition.

New deal: Syd Millar

IRB chairman Syd Millar said: "I believe the future of the Heineken Cup will be secured.

"Genuine dialogue between the Rugby Football Union and Premier Rugby Limited [who represent England's top 12 clubs] is under way.

"I remain positive that an agreement on the key issues for the game in England can be put in place shortly which will provide long-term security for the European competitions."

It is believed the RFU will agree to pay the salaries of England's top 32 players.

Earlier this month RFU chief executive Francis Baron said: "We estimate that Premier Rugby Ltd expectations are for an increase in annual funding of £10.6m on top of their current £5m a year."
