Heinze may fight for move as Gerrard rides high

Liverpool are waiting to see if Gabriel Heinze takes legal action to allow him to join them from Manchester United despite Sir Alex Ferguson appearing to slam the door shut on any move by the Argentina left-back to sign for the champions' great rivals.

Rafa Benitez has not given up hope of taking the 29-year-old to Anfield, as the player's agent has a letter from United confirming that they will sell to any club willing to pay £6 million.

On target: Steven Gerrard scores the opening goal against Auxerre

But United chief executive David Gill has reinforced the Ferguson stance. "What does a letter mean? Nothing," he said.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard set Liverpool up for a fourth win in four pre-season games with his last kick against Auxerre.

The skipper dispatched the opener in Fribourg after 45 minutes before being replaced in the second half.

Danish defender Daniel Agger made it 2-0 with a header as manager Benitez saw his men complete the Switzerland stage of their preparations before flying off to Hong Kong today.

New boys Fernando Torres, Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Andriy Voronin were all given run outs but failed to make a real impact.

Moroccan winger Nabil El Zhar looked the liveliest after coming on as a substitute.

Benitez said: "Nabil is a player with pace and ability who wants to do well. I told him to try different things and try to score."
