Hicks set to take control of Liverpool

Tom Hicks moved a step closer to assuming sole control of Liverpool after securing the funds needed to buy out co-owner George Gillett.

Gillett now holds the key to Liverpool's future ownership, as Hicks and Dubai International Capital jockey for position in a power battle that could finally be resolved in the next week.

Champion feeling: Gerrard is sure Liverpool can secure fourth spot and a Champions League place

Hicks still hopes Gillett will forget their recent differences and agree to transfer his 50 per cent stake to him for around £200million.

DIC are mindful that Hicks can veto any attempt by Gillett to sell to them and will launch a £400m bid to buy out both Americans.

On the pitch, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says they face a fight to secure fourth place, but believes they will prevail at the end of the season.

He said: 'I don't think those around us are really expecting us to take fourth, because they are fighting for it themselves. It's going to be difficult for us because all the others have strengthened and are hitting the right form.

'But confidence is high at the moment and if we play to our capabilities between now and the end of the season that fourth spot will be ours.'
