Hollywood break for England boss McClaren

Steve McClaren's decision to fly 5,500 miles to see David Beckham play in a Mickey Mouse charity match last night caught members of the FA by surprise.

Senior officials at the FA were not even aware of his trip until 24 hours after he had left.

Checking up: McClaren was having a close look at Beckham

The England coach will argue he had to check on Beckham's fitness before recalling him for England's final European Championship qualifier.

But a game against a Hollywood team boasting Def Leppard guitarist Viv Campbell and Sex Pistols Paul Cook and Steve Jones is unlikely to prove that he is ready to replace Shaun Wright-Phillips on the right wing.

McClaren's trip will, however, increase speculation that he is making plans in anticipation of losing his job if England fail to qualify for the finals.

Los Angeles Galaxy coach Frank Yallop is said to be facing the sack after failing to reach the MLS playoffs, providing a vacancy that McClaren might be keen to fill.

His assistant, Terry Venables, seems to be having similar thoughts and has emerged as the favourite to replace sacked Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton.
