Howell makes the most of his howlers

There were looks of amazement on the face of David Howell and all around him in Doha as the Englishman's name appeared high on the leaderboard on the second day of the Qatar Masters.

It had nothing to do with a long-awaited comeback from an injury which saw the former world No 13 fail to record a top-10 finish in 2007.

Howell: amazement

It was the way Howell compiled a second-round 68 to be six under par, three shots behind halfway leader Johan Edfors of Sweden.

Bagman Nick Mumford said: 'That was like caddieing for Seve Ballesteros.'

'No,' said Howell's playing partner, Peter Hanson. 'Seve never played that badly.'

Howell said sheepishly: 'I have not driven the ball well for two days but you can get lucky in the scrub here and I have made the most of every situation I found myself in and putted well.

'I hit a terrible shot at 16 and ended up in rocks but there were two big loose boulders that we were able to move and I chipped on from 40 yards to make a birdie.

'In the trees at the second I got a free drop from a sprinkler head which gave me an easy second shot.'

Equally happy after a 68 to be five under was Colin Montgomerie, who adapted well to a snap of cold weather.

But there was only frustration for joint overnight leader Lee Westwood.

Only a pair of late birdies took him under par for the day to be within two shots of Edfors, who shot 66.
