Hutchins serves up a shock British victory at Roland Garros

Ross Hutchins claimed the biggest win of his career as the British Davis Cup player partnered Stephen Huss to beat one of the best doubles pairings in the world at Roland Garros today.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles are seeded four and have 88 titles between them.

But the Briton, son of the head of men's tennis at the Lawn Tennis Association, Paul Hutchins, cruised to a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 first-round win with his Australian partner.

Hutchins, 23, who joined forces with Jamie Murray in Britain's Davis Cup world group defeat in Argentina in February, is ranked 87 in doubles.

He took heart from Andy Murray's singles victory against Jose Acaususo yesterday and said: "Andy killed Jose in that match and I haven't seen anyone hit the ball that cleanly all year. He was unbelievable.

"Something like that does give you a lift and he was a class better than anyone else I have seen.

"I have been playing with Hussy for five weeks now and this win is right up there with my very best on tour and we are committed to playing on grass together.

"We had planned to play Surbiton next week, which may still be the case, unless we can keep winning here.

"Bhupathi and Knowles are a formidable team but I beat Mahesh last year and believed we could do it again. We produced an excellent match.

"I felt that we could come through this one and it's a partnership that I hope will continue."

Seventh seeded American James Blake became the highest rated player to be knocked out when he lost his second round match 7-6,3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Latvia's Ernests Gulbis, who beat Tim Henman last year.

In the women's event, former champion Venus Williams had few problems as she advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tunisia's Selima Sfar.

The elder Williams sister, now 27 and winner at Roland Garros nine years ago, made a sloppy 25 unforced errors but was still far too strong for Sfar.

Her next opponent will be 26th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy, who beat Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Williams' serve was broken to put her behind 2-1, but she didn't drop another game until leading 1-0 in the second set. Williams was dominant at the net, winning 24 of the 35 points during which she went forward.
