However, the Serbian powerhouse has shown in ever-increasingly impressive performances that he has now settled in nicely at Old Trafford and formed a strong partnership with Rio Ferdinand.
Heading for the top: Vidic has shown he is fully adapted to English football and shown a useful eye for goal for United
A major factor in last season's title success, Vidic has the happy knack of finding the net for his club, scoring the winner at Everton earlier this season, one of five goals in his 69 appearances.
Vidic this month signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at United until 2012.
He told Sport magazine: "The first couple of months after I joined, I wasn't me. I could not pass the ball properly, or control a simple ball. My confidence was gone and I started to think maybe England wasn't for me. But after a couple of months, I learnt how to play. Now you see the real Nemanja Vidic."
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Nemanja has made a terrific impact at the club and has forged a partnership with Rio Ferdinand that was a major part in us winning the title last year.
"He is an extremely popular member of the squad, both with staff and fans alike. It's great news that he wants to be part of this exciting side for years to come."
Milan nightmare: Vidic, Van der Sar and Heinze
The lowlight of Vidic's stay in England so far was the disastrous match against Milan when, after being rushed back from injury, the defender had a shocker in the 3-0 Champions League semi-final in Italy.
He said: "That was after I broke my collar bone and came back. That was my worst game for the team, no question. It was a very bad night, but I am over it now."
