I decide if Owen is fit for England, says Allardyce

Sam Allardyce has warned Michael Owen and Steve McClaren that England's needs will not be put above his club's as the player recovers from a double groin operation.

Newcastle striker Owen, 27, returned to training on Tuesday, three days after Dr Ulrike Muschaweck operated on his injury in Germany.

This fuelled the belief that he will be fit for England's European Championship double-header later this month against Estonia and Russia.

But Newcastle boss Allardyce, who has not revealed whether he thinks his team's Premier League game with Everton on Sunday is too early a return for the striker, said: "A decision like that is taken by me, the club doctor, the head of sports medicine, the senior physiotherapist, the person who reads the scan and the specialist.

"The FA and England coach Steve McClaren are not involved. It is a Newcastle United decision."

Owen's availability would be especially welcomed by the England boss, who must plan without Emile Heskey — out with a broken foot after contributing significantly to last month's Wembley victory over Russia.
