I don't want excuses - Jo's not enough as Richards wants new faces at City

Tip of the iceberg: the signing of Jo from CSKA Moscow needs to be just the start of strengthening the City squad believes Micah Richards

Micah Richards has demanded more new faces for Manchester City to ensure the Blues have 'no excuses' at the end of the season.

New boss Mark Hughes has made his first signing as City boss, with the arrival of Brazilian striker Jo expected to be officially confirmed by the Eastlands outfit as their record £19million signing.

But Richards is looking for more, as City bid to break into the cash-rich top four.

Owner Thaksin Shinawatra is attempting to have almost £1billion worth of assets unfrozen in his native Thailand - and when he does, the England defender expects more movement.

'With a new manager in place, I am hoping we can get some new players in all positions to strengthen the squad and give it a really good go,' Richards told the Manchester Evening News.

'Let's hope we can get to the end of the campaign and say "We had a good season".

'We don't want to be making excuses and saying "We should have done this or that".'

Richards has recovered from a knee injury and will be available for the new season, which starts in just over a fortnight as City begin their UEFA Cup campaign.

The Blues learn their first qualifying round opponents tomorrow, with the first leg due to be played on July 17.

But Sun Jihai, Paul Dickov and Emile Mpenza will not be involved - because they have all been released by Hughes - while Georgios Samaras and Andreas Isaksson will both leave if Celtic and PSV Eindhoven can stump up the £3million and £2million respectively that the City boss believes the pair are worth.
