I knew I'd play more at City than at Spurs, admits Petrov

New Manchester City signing Martin Petrov has admitted he turned down a move to Tottenham because he feared he may not be good enough to play for Spurs on a regular basis.

The Bulgaria international will be more than happy to play under Sven Goran Eriksson's new regime at Eastlands once he gets a work permit to ratify his £4.7million move from Atletico Madrid.

He feels he will be more involved in City's plans than he would have been at Tottenham where the riches at Martin Jol's disposal are far greater.

Petrov will be paid a £55,000-a-week deal with City, which is way above what he was offered in Tottenham's pay structure.

But he confessed: "My choice is not only about money but football questions too. Simply, I need to play and I believe I would get more minutes for City than Tottenham.

"I did speak with Dimitar Berbatov and he tried to convince me to join Tottenham but our ways will be different in England. He is a friend but has accepted my decision.

"Eriksson is ambitious and City is a very attractive challenge for me and I believe we will be successful. I am fit after my injury problems, I am strong and I think my style will suit the English game."
