I messed up big time, says Scolari

Luiz Felipe Scolari today made an admission his most celebrated predecessor as Chelsea coach, Jose Mourinho, would never dreamed of conceding. "I made a mistake, a big mistake," said the Brazilian.

With the Portugal boss trying to conserve his squad's energy, he rested eight of his first-team players and saw their replacements lose 2-0 to the already-eliminated Swiss.

Yet, Scolari scolded himself for not having changed the entire team.

"We ran too many risks," he said. "I tried to see which players had played more during the season and who had been injured. That's why I replaced eight. It should have been more." Four received yellow cards which will be carried over to the knock-out stage, including Paulo Ferreira.

Portugal play their quarter-final on Thursday at the St Jakob-Park stadium in Basle, where the pitch is being replaced at a cost of £157,000 after it was waterlogged during last week's Switzerland-Turkey game.
